Natural Hair Care Documentation 3

Thank Goodness for clips and a few pulls and flumps, 'cause I couldn't find a hat.

Week # 3 with the hair experiment. I had thought to finish today. I want to thank everyone for their interest and very helpful comments. A very non-eventfull experiment, or so it seemed until last night.

I had washed my hair Sunday morning using a quart jar to dissolve 1/4th cup of baking soda, pouring it over my hair, scrubbing some-maybe not enough(?), rinsing well, and diluting some white vinegar ( I really don't think white vinegar is a great idea, but I had it at the kitchen sink), rinsing again and done! Very quick, and no messing around. I used a comparatively small proportion of water to the previous method, so this saves water too!!

Sunday night we were getting ready to go to church again. As I began to comb out my hair to get ready for a couple of photos, I noticed that it felt heavier, and the more I worked with it the oilier it got. Bryon came in and took a couple of pictures for me, he noticed that I had a lot of fine flakes close to my scalp. What? that's his problem, I never have dandruff. The more I messed with my hair, the more lumpier it got, I was running out of time, we needed to go soon.  I was waiting for Bryon to start reminding me that we were going to be late. Further more the lasagne we ate for lunch made me so thirsty, I began to resemble a blowfish, and my shirt didn't fit me very well.

The moral of the story is that it may take longer than 3 weeks to clarify.

What my hair experiment has shown me so far:

  • My hair is not limp and dull, it actually feels nice and full
  • My forehead does not break out when my hair needs washing
  • My scalp does not itch then either
  • It is very oily right now but it feels clean-sounds strange, to prove it:
  • I don't smell wet dog when I get my hair wet! That's gross, sorry!
  • I still have a ways to go before I know how this will work for me!
  • Pictures can't show the full effect either.

Oily, lumpy, bespecked, and heavy

  1. I can't just pour a vinegar/water rinse on my hair or it is greasy. I keep my vinegar/water rinse in a small spray bottle and spray my hair, mostly the middle and ends, just a bit around the crown, as I am getting out of the shower. I don't rinse. The vinegar smell goes away once the hair is dry or mostly dry. This way my hair is softer and not as full of tangles as it is without a vinegar rinse, but it doesn't look greasy all of the time either.

  2. Tracy- Ok, so you think maybe the oiliness is because of the vinegar? I'll try this just vinerinsing to the bottom portion of my hair.

I also have been using hard water just to add dimension to this project!

  3. I feel your pain! I just started my third week no poo and it's getting harder to commit too. I would recommend only using the vinegar at the ends also. I think it contributes to the greasiness. Also I only use 1 tbsp baking soda per one cup water. I heard if you up the baking soda it can make your hair greasier. Who knows? Good luck!!!

  4. Allie has been doing it about the same time as you. she doesn't do the vinegar rinse.. not even sure if she does a reg conditioner at all. She thinks it made her dandruff worse, I think it has gotten a lot better. It did clear up her forehead a lot and her hair that use to make me barf when fixing it is actually pretty soft and nice feeling now! She had really bad oily hair too so I was wondering how this would work for her but so far so good and she is pretty good about getting the baking soda and mixing it up herself for a 12 yr old!

  5. That is really great Amber, I noticed, and mentioned to Allie that her hair looked nice, I didn't know she was doing the b-soda. I am just glad to quit breaking out too.

  6. My hair,well..scalp, was REALLY bad last winter (and was acting like it was going to be bad this winter) and I wanted to cut it off at the pass. I believe the chlorine and junk in the city water here makes it really bad. Itchy miserable etc. SO I found this little invention which seems to be working great! Took an empty shampoo bottle, filled it about 1/3 with VO5 shampoo (pretty cheap stuff but it was a clarifying type) and filled the rest with white vinegar. I just squirt it on, suds it up and leave it while I wash the rest of me/shave. Then I rinse it out. My hair is on the dry side (not oily) so I then use a conditioner after that, and rinse my whole scalp with cool/cold water. Seems to work!! In an extreme flaky emergency, wash as normal then do a straight vinegar rinse with cold water. Knocks flakes right out. Just a note :)
