Well, I've been putting it off for two weeks now. Look now at my hair, freshly washed and conditioned. I am getting out on a limb and I've made a family announcement: I am going to quit the shampoo and do what is called "no-poo".
What? No, it has nothing to do with poo (I've defiantly changed my share of diapers) like I thought at first. It is cleaning your hair without the Sham. I will be using baking soda to clean my hair.
Will it work?
Will my scalp itch like the Dickens?
Will my hair look the same?
Will I look gross for two weeks until the clarifying process is complete?
Keep posted as I give this a chance, but I don't promise lovely pictures with tidy backgrounds. This is real. Actually I picked this time because I know that I won't be coming to church for two weeks, as I understand it can take that long or longer for your hair to adjust. My sister made me promise to take close-ups at the back of my head to get the full effect. She would, wouldn't she.
I consider myself a good candidate for this experiment. I have average hair, it's average in length, thickness and color. There is some wave, not a lot, so two days after a washing my hair is flat and limp. ALSO...on the health side I am a firm believer that shampoo is full of toxins and I massage them into my scalp twice a week! Sure, I could go for the expensive brands with out the soduim laureth sulfate and other unpronounceable goodies, but, when there is a frugal solution, I say go for it! I'm always game to try these things.

Yay! I can't wait to see the end results
I'm interested to see how this turns out! Don't think it would work for me though since I have to wash my hair ever day...ended up with the oily hair...
OK I am interested in this experiment. Hmmmmmmm

Me too, Kat!!! Thanks for your interest!
Hi! I found you via the Frugal Days site. I actually did this a few months ago, I've been on baking soda & water for as long now - my hair sheds less (and I have fine hair) and just feels SO much better. It's fairly long (several inches below my shoulders) and during my shampoo days, it would get INCREDIBLY greasy and disgusting if I tried to go without washing it for a day (forget two.)
The first 4 days to a week are the hardest. I almost gave up. Apparently, because you strip your hair with shampoo, it dries it out and causes your scalp to overproduce oil. So when you stop using shampoo, your scalp is still overproducing and it takes a little while for it to readjust. I used a lot more baking soda then then I do now, but baking soda totally takes care of the oil & any hair product. Months later, I just use less than a teaspoon of baking soda in a small travel size squirt bottle of (warm) water, squeeze that over my head and done. Actually, I could probably do this every OTHER day as my scalp is noticeably MUCH less oily than it used to be.
Also, invest in a nice boar bristle brush (use ONLY on dry hair.) My head itched like mad and I would brush a lot just to "scratch" my head. But that only lasted a few days, also. It never itches, anymore. And brushing at night/during the day helps distribute what natural oils you do have.
Good luck and hang in there! That first week SUCKED for me. But totally worth it - I used expensive Aveda shampoos, so I've been saving a ton of money by using baking soda (my hair is colored, also, and it hasn't affected my color - PLUS I also use much less hair product. Win win!)
Nikki-thank you for your information, very helpful!
Eternity- YOOHOO did you read this!!
I also went poo free a few months ago and my hair is much healthier. Along with the baking soda, I also use a apple cider vinegar rinse that I leave in (1 tbsp of acv per large glass of water) that makes the hair shiny and soft. The vinegar smell is gone when it dries. My hair gets very dry even with the best of conditioners so I put a VERY SMALL amount of olive oil on the ends. I have a pump that was left over from another hair oil product (Moroccan Oil which despite the chemicals, is a totally awesome product!) I filled it with olive oil and a few drops of tea tree oil. I use this concoction as a facial moisturizer first and then the left over on my hands is what goes on my hair ends. Works great and everything is moisturized! :-) Good luck with your experiment!
