Food Storage: Before

Our current method of food storage is ok, just ok.

I love my gallon jars, I have those filled on my kitchen counter, stored sugar in a kitchen cupboard, and stuffed into the pantry betwixt the canning.

My plan when we designed our pantry was to have the floor space under the bottom shelf tall enough for 5 gal. buckets. Try and open one of them ( with a lid that seals tight enough to keep out the baddies) up with one hand (the other is full of dough) for just a few cups of flour. Instead I have been saving all our ice cream buckets (excuse me- my dear husbands ice cream - my buckets). They are handy to store small amounts of goodies like nuts and dried fruit. They also stack well in the freezer.

I  had hung up the idea on the 5 gal. buckets until today. I just read  Life In a Shoe   I am totally inspired to get with it and move into the old dish washer spot! Solutions are on the way in the shape of:

This was baking day today, a timely find when bags of flour are so annoying to trip over. And so temping for Timothy to sift  his grubby little mitts through!

I have heard that by placing a stick of Wrigley's Spearmint gum in with your stored grains the moths will stay away. This hasn't been proven by me as of yet, but when you buy food in bulk it pays to be careful. Also I've noticed some bulk food stores are cleaner and better kept than others. My  favorite is The Country Bulk Barn- they even have free shipping on some of their products.
