Buttons

I read a long time ago about a trick of sewing buttons on for keeps. It works too. I'd like to let shirt manufactures in on this. I don't know how many times I've pulled loose thread on a shirt only to have the button come completely undone. But be sure to use good thread or no sort of trick will do any good.
Shown in the picture is nylon thread. I used it to sew buttons on my couch pillows. It's very tough and gives some. I used yarn in these demo photos to show the steps.
On the underside of the fabric sew in place two or three times.

Sew the button in place 5 or 6 times. On the last stitch come up through the fabric and bring your needle out under the button.
Now wind the thread around the "stem" firmly about 7 times. Bring the needle to the underside of the fabric. Sew in place 2 or 3 times and tie off.

There. it takes a minute and a half to sew a four hole button by hand.

  1. Since it only takes you a min and a half to do four.. I will be up with my mending pile in the morning.
