The Garden Takes Priority

It's green beans, my latest passion, that, and some zucchini and cucumbers. Fresh cucumbers are dream, and they don't make you fat.

The garden is coming in and my free time, already set at a minimum dwindles. Anytime I want to get off my feet it's only to snap green beans and shove them into a jar. I don't look at the temperature in my kitchen any more, 89 degrees feels the same as 85: hot, lets get this job done. But I love to preserve food. I love to fill my pantry shelves with my sweat and toil, it warms me in the winter.

Tomatoes are abundant but still green,  my peppers are plentiful and we are using them every day. I had plans for dill pickles but alas, my sweet tendrils have succumb to the deadly Bacterial Wilt. This problem follows me. I am not sure if I am the cause or merely the elements the culprits. My brother in law is good at this stuff, one know-it-all to another, I should get this problem figured out, so as not to repeat it in my garden next year. The winter squash seems to be following suit, but the watermelons still look well. The cabbages are beginning to head, and it's nice that the boys are willing to help pulling off worms!

All in all I love my garden this year. Oh, it is all overwhelming, and I am not in total control of the weeds, yet I am, in my own way, more about that in a post about mulch (and I am sure you will find that most exciting). This is the biggest garden I have ever made on my own. When I was growing up we had huge gardens, potato field, corn field, etc. The family helps very well, and Nathanial is good to watch Timothy while I work before the heat gets to me. Bryon has often come to my rescue and helped me finish weeding or picking.

So blogging has been put on the back burner, behind the canner.

  1. mmm Okra! Covered in corn flour and cooked in butter is the best! To bad they don't have that here :( I also (don't let my dad find out) do miss having a garden, just run out their and pick what you want for dinner sure was nice!

  2. Yes, we like okra that way too. Maybe someday you can have a garden of your own-how does Jeremy feel about gardens and okra? It took Bryon a bit to warm up to gardens and southern cooking!!

  3. He does not mind the gardens, but he think the okra is over rated. I'll have to wait till we buy a house here since I don't think the Land-lord would be happy if I tear up the back yard ;)
